Tretinoin, or the brand name Retin-A, is a derivative of Vitamin A that is applied topically to the skin to treat acne, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve your skin texture and tone. Tretinoin is a prescription topical gel or cream that comes in different strengths.
Tretinoin works by irritating the skin, speeding up the life cycle of cells so that they turnover faster allowing for newer healthier cells to take their place.
Because Tretinoin promotes exfoliation, it helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by exfoliating the top layer of skin. Studies have shown that consistent use of Tretinoin can improve skin laxity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Here at Rita Medical Elite in Sarasota, FL, we dispense Tretinoin in two strengths: 0.05% and 0.1%. We usually recommend clients who are new to using Tretinoin to start with the 0.05% first, and switch to the higher strength later if tolerated well.
Rita Medical Elite recommends using Tretinoin before bed. It should be applied after washing the face, but at least 15 to 20 minutes before applying a moisturizer. Tretinoin can make your skin more susceptible to sunburns, so it’s extremely important to wear sunscreen daily. Skin irritation can occur, so if you can use every other night if you become overly dry and irritated.
Results can be seen in as little as 2-3 weeks but it can take 6 weeks or more to see a noticeable difference.
