The Importance of Zinc Oxide in your Sunscreen Products

Skincare and Sunscreen products from Rita Medical Elite

Summertime is right around the corner here in Sarasota, Florida. With all of the outdoor activities, it is imperative to protect your skin from the harmful UVB and UVA rays from the sun. Choosing a product with Zinc Oxide is the most effective way to properly protect yourself from sunburns and damaging UVB and UVA rays.

UVB Rays, or “The Burning Rays” mostly affect the outer layer of skin. These rays cause sunburns and increase the risk of skin cancer. They vary with the time of day and seasons, and are stronger in the summertime.

UVA Rays, or “The Aging Rays”, deeply penetrate skin layers, damaging collagen and cells. These rays cause wrinkling, loss of elasticity and pigmentation. UVA Rays are 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays.

Zinc Oxide occurs naturally in the mineral zincite, a rare element. It is often combined with Titanium Dioxide and used in sunblocks and other cosmetic products as a shield against harmful UVB and UVA rays. Zinc Oxide acts as a barrier on the surface of the skin and blocks, scatters and reflects ultraviolet rays. It is antimicrobial and non-comedogenic (will not clog pores), and is great for sensitive skin. Zinc Oxide can aid in calming redness in skin, and is a good choice for people with Rosacea. Mineral sunscreens are a much better choice over chemical sunscreens, as chemicals can be absorbed, can clog pores, and they can be irritating to people with sensitive skin or those who have dry skin due to Eczema. Zinc Oxide protects from both the UVB and UVA rays, should be worn year round-rain or shin, and should be reapplied during sun exposure
